My Favourite Subject

At Faith Lutheran College, we're challenging the traditional, industrial model of school. So, what does that look like in practice? On this page, we introduce you to our Exploration Phase - an exciting and dynamic educational offering for students in Years 9 and 10 at Faith.

Exploration Phase

When our students reach Years 9 and 10 at Faith, the year levels merge to provide students with freedom of choice in the subjects they choose to study.

We believe students learn best when they are exploring topics and subject matter that interests them.

That's why we've introduced a wide range of custom-designed subjects, written by our expert teaching staff, that map to the Australian curriculum and not only provide a highly rigorous education, but the opportunity to fall in love with what they are learning about.

Our Director of Teaching and Learning, Jen Gibb, explains how the Exploration Phase works in this short video:

How does Exploration Phase work?

The Teaching and Learning team at Faith Lutheran College has meticulously planned the learning that takes place in these important years.

All custom-designed subjects have been mapped to the Australian Curriculum to ensure our students are meeting and, in some cases, exceeding the national educational requirements.

The following subjects are the only compulsory subjects that students must undertake during Exploration Phase:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities
  • Christian

From here, Exploration Phase students can choose from a broad range of elective subjects.

All the traditional subjects that you can find in most schools are on offer, but there's also a wide range of custom-designed subjects that work across two or more traditional areas to create unique and exciting subjects that students love.

Here's one of our Exploration Phase students, Ethan, sharing what he loves about his favourite subject, CO2 Drag Racing:

In the next video, Olivia shares why Community Theatre is her favourite subject:

What's a cross-curricular subject?

Faith's exciting new range of subjects are called cross-curricular subjects.

But what does that actually mean?

Basically, it means a subject has been created by merging two or more traditional areas of study.

To illustrate, the following table outlines the subject areas of the subjects that we feature in the videos on this page:

Cross-Curricular Subject Subject areas mapped to
CO2 Drag Racing
Technologies, Science (Physics), Mathematics
