Held annually, the QUT Future You STEM Summit offers high-achieving Year 11 and Year 12 students the opportunity to expand their skill sets beyond the classroom and explore future career ambitions through an immersive four-day program. Taking place in the September school holidays and utilising the science, technology and engineering facilities housed at the Queensland University of Technology’s Gardens Point campus, the Summit aims to help guide a new generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators to build the jobs of Australia’s future.
This year, one outstanding student from Faith Lutheran College has been selected to participate in the event.
Gwen Veness, currently in Year 11, was encouraged to apply by members of the Science department, who drew her attention to the program after some exemplary results in both her Year 10 Science studies, and across the first semester of Year 11 Physics and Chemistry. The application, which included written statements, submission of academic transcripts and references from teaching staff, was strong enough to secure a place in the program and will see Gwen rewarded with access to an immersive four-day program of keynote speakers, interactive Q&A panel sessions, and practical activities, including university-level laboratory exercises and participation in live research projects currently being undertaken by QUT.
In addition, Gwen will also have the chance to network with QUT Alumni and Academic staff, and gain first-hand insight into undergraduate life in preparation for a potential post-school pathway into science, mathematics, health or engineering.
When asked about her application, and what she was looking forward to the most, Gwen was full of praise for her teachers – in particular, Senior Physics and Chemistry teacher, Ms. Jo Robbins:
“I found out about the program through Ms. Robbins. I chose to apply as I thought the program would be very interesting and would give me an idea of life at university, as well as the opportunity to do some things I’ve never done. I was over the moon when I found out I was selected… I remember I messaged my friends and my teacher to say how excited I was. I would like to thank Ms. Robbins for introducing the program to me and for encouraging and supporting my application. I’m very appreciative of all the effort and work she puts in for all her students.”
With the Summit itself a few months away, Gwen definitely has an incredible opportunity to look forward to, but clearly has her eye on one particular aspect of the program – the hands-on experiences in the QUT labs.
“I’m [most] looking forward to the Science practicals and experiments we will be doing – especially the one focused on mechanical and design engineering.”
Faith Lutheran College would like to congratulate Gwen on her selection for this year’s program, and we look forward to hearing about her experiences at QUT when she arrives back at the College at the beginning of Term 4. Fantastic effort, Gwen!
