Year 11 Health Students at Faith Lutheran College, Plainland
Mental Health and Wellbeing was explored in-depth by our Year 11 Health Class recently, as students from Faith Lutheran College were invited to participate in 'Talkin’ it Up’ - a Regional Youth Mental Health Forum led by West Moreton Health on Thursday 14 July, 2022.

Faith Lutheran College recently enjoyed an opportunity to be involved in the ‘Talkin’ it Up’ program, an initiative which aims to reduce the stigma of mental health, and educate audiences on the significance of the topic. Led by West Moreton Health, the event saw 200 students from 14 schools around the West Moreton region gather together at the Laidley Cultural Centre, to participate in a program of workshops, group activities and presentations that aimed to educate and inform youth and young adults.

Participating as part of their studies in Year 11 Health, students from Ms. Zischke’s class were offered an opportunity to hear from multiple speakers, exploring a range of topics including the ‘Wheel of Wellbeing’, and strategies to acknowledge and manage mental health. Livin’ – a not-for-profit mental health awareness and advocacy organisation, facilitated a particularly memorable message, displaying personal stories and highlighting their organisational mantra (‘it ain’t weak to speak’) and issues that arise with the stigma against mental health awareness.

In addition to guest speakers, representatives from Talkin’ it Up’  program – including our entertaining MC, Bronwyn Lewis – also facilitated 4 breakout activities that each focused on a sector of the Wheel of Wellbeing and their relative importance in maintaining positive mental health. These focused on helping students to develop an understanding of how to implement the framework into our everyday life.

As an end to the day, we were invited to hear from a beat boxer, Austamatic (Reece Streeting), who shared his personal experience of mental health, and delivered an impactful message on the way in which mental health does not define a person, and can be managed through seeking help and embracing healthy coping mechanisms.

Overall, the ‘Talkin’ it Up’ program offered our school, and many others, a valuable opportunity to be educated on mental health, and how we, as adolescents, can help ourselves and others to maintain positive mental wellbeing.
