An opportunity to participate in a one-day workshop at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute has opened doors to a potential career in Toxicology and Pharmacology for Senior student, Kalani Birch.
While Kalani currently serves as the College’s Creative Arts Leader and often lends her creative talents to musical and performing art endeavours, her interest in Science is equally strong, with aspirations to pursue a career in the biological sciences after completing her secondary studies at Faith.
These career aspirations were given a boost over the Easter holiday break, when, through an opportunity promoted by College Careers Counsellor, Mr. Ninasivinche, Kalani was able to participate in a one-day Science Experience Workshop at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.
During the workshop Kalani was able to participate in a range of activities, including work in blood biology. At secondary school level, students are not permitted to work with blood, so this was a unique opportunity to engage in some hands-on laboratory work under the tuition of highly-qualified researchers in the field of medical science.
Aspiring to pursue a Bachelor of Science after completing her Year 12 studies, Kalani reflected positively on the experience as “cement” for her passion and ambition to follow a career pathway in the medical sciences, in particular the fields of Pharmacology and Toxicology – the branch of science that deals with the study of drugs and their actions on living systems.
Kalani, we wish you well for your final months here at Faith, and we hope and pray that your aspirations for the future come to fruition!
